COMMUNITY SERVICE

Community service is a program conducted in school for three weekends where we have to teach the activities chosen by us to the kids who come from nearby villages. I have chosen dance and therefore every weekend we teach dance to them on different songs of their choice. This experience makes me Knowledgeable: As I have a bit of knowledge about Dance and therefore I am able to share it with others which makes me knowledgeable. And Communicator: The kids from the village do not know english and therefore we have to communicate with them and make them understand the directions in the language which they are comfortable with and we need to communicate with them to make them believe that we are good teachers as in dance teacher which makes me a communicator.

Learning outcomes achieved:

  • Learning outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I know that I love dancing which is my strength and therefore what I had to do was to develop my skills in it. As I had to teach younger kids, we had to prepare the dance prior to the class. Therefore it helped me in improving my choreography and understanding of the song, how to match the steps and the lyrics of the song and because it was for kids, I had to make sure that the steps are a bit easy and comfortable for the kids to do. Also if any step was hard for the kids, we had to change it on the spot therefore it helped in developing my thinking skills and I had to think of the steps on the spot and teach them to kids.

  • Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

This was my first time teaching kids, dance. Therefore it was a big challenge for me as teaching something is a difficult job because it needs good communication skills and proper knowledge. I took this challenge and developed my own knowledge and understanding of dance and communicating skills.

  • Learning outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

As this was a Three weekend long experience, I had to be committed and persistent to it because if I have taken any responsibility, it is my duty to be committed and persistent to it. I attended all the sessions except one as I was sick and therefore I couldn’t make it for once but I had covered my work in other sessions by teaching more to the kids.

  • Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

As we were 7 members in total for teaching dance, communication and collaboration was must so that the whole session goes smoothly and there are no misunderstandings or arguments with ourselves. Teesha and I being the senior most, had the most responsibility and therefore we planned how we can work together and divide the job amongst all of us. This is how we worked collaboratively and recognised that it helps in making the work easier.

  • Learning outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Poverty is a major global issue. And the people who are underprivileged do not get opportunity or chance to learn new things and therefore we have taught the underprivileged kids, dance for free. We had a lot of fun with them and also we got to know many things about their lifestyle and realise how blessed I am.

  • Learning outcome 7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

While Teaching dance to the kids, we had to be ethical and keep our choices of action in mind. This includes that we don’t shout or scold the kids and behave well with them and also we do not do any discrimination amongst them.
