Community Service was an initiative done by the school for students to teach various activities to underprivileged students from various schools. My part in this initiative was to teach students to play Football. During this experience, I faced a lot of difficulties in teaching students to play soccer as first of all I was not experienced being a teacher or the one teaching as I am a student and this helped me understand the efforts teachers put behind a student.
LO 2-Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
In Football, we taught them to the basics of playing the sport such as the rules, and the formations of soccer like attackers, midfielders and defenders. Then we started teaching them how to play the sport by practicing drills and playing matches. Some of the challenges I face were to teach the girls as they had no experience of playing so it was quite hard to communicate with them. Then we faced difficulties with helping them gain leg and eye coordinations they had never placed a sport with the primary part being the leg so it took time for them to adjust to this new experience. It was challenging cause every day we had to repeat the same drills again as they were rookies in this sport and I could not make it interesting for them. This was a new experience for me as well so I believe I should have been better trained for this opportunity.
LO 4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Community service was held for 3 weeks on Saturdays and Sundays so to regularly attend was a must for me. It was on weekends so it needs a lot of dedication as it was our only holiday for that month. The thing which kept me doing was the happiness those kids had while playing it was that moment when I knew that what I was doing was serving a good cause.
LO 5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively
Working together made us more efficient and hardworking as it made our work easier and more teachers means more fun. Teaching together increases better learning as one may be good in a post whereas the other may not so I feel it was better to work together in a group. I had to portray communication skills as we had to cooperate with others and not mess up so I feel that working together was great.
LO 6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
I consider the ability to play, a very important factor for better growth and it also aligns with the SDG of Quality education .I think that practical education is as necessary as classroom study. While teaching these kids all of us learnt something new which may have been not possible in class. I learnt that we should always appreciate the small things in life as for us a small gesture would have life changing results in the others persons life. I could see the enthusiasm and eagerness of those children to learn something which would not have been possible in class. This made me believe that instead of feeling bad about something which makes us miserable , we should find a hit of happiness in it to keep us going.
Overall, Community Service gave us exposure to many skill sets and helped us develop attributes to become a better person and a better learner.
