CAS Project

Our CAS Project was teaching students students in our school to make biodegradable pencils, these pencils had a unique aspect of being biodegradable as well as being able to grow into a plant. the taught the students of grades 1,2,4 and 5 during an event called creative mela. my task was to actually test some prototypes of the pencil and assist students while making the pencils.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

This project required our team to work collaboratively and put our various individual skills to use. I took up the responsibility to test the prototypes because I was able to build one pencil well and i had the creativity to tweak the design when needed. since i was able to build the pencil well i also helped children with some difficult steps while building in class.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

A great challenge we face was difference in timetables, this problem was persistent because we all had a unique scheduled to our lifestyle which meant it was considerably difficult to gather the whole group for a meeting. we overcame this problems by making certain adjustments to our plans and on other occasions we communicated asynchronously. personally this also helped me improve my time management skills and communication skills.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

This particular project required a LOT of planning, each action we took had to be discussed before hand in order to keep the whole team at the same page and the results of these actions also had to be taken into consideration.for us to teach students across multiple grades also meant we had to plan what to teach excet just how to make the pencil. Furthermore we had hold meeting with each team leader for each grade so that materiels, venues and dates could be finalised.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experience

Having the duty to test the pencil and assist while making one i had make a large amount of pencils at home in order to improve consistency and also in order to analyse how appropriate the materials, instructions were.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

One of the biggest advantages of having a team is the ability to split work into different parts so that one person does not have to experience excessive burden at a time. Our team conquered problems by delegating tasks. Doing so allowed us to better manage our  time and also overcome the barrier of separate schedules. Furthermore by having more members of my team we were able to discuss and address problems from various points of views and were able to brainstorm effective solutions very quickly.  our team in particular was very supportive of each other and by doing so we were able to effectively use various skills that our team offered in order to reach our goal.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Global issues that the CAS project catered were Climate Action and Life on Land. Our project helped the youth to gain awareness about reducing waste, recycling it, and reusing it. We also spread awareness about the importance of trees in our society

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

The ethical choices that were made for this project was certainly very important. First of all we considered the quality of the product that we were going to teach, of course if the product we are teaching is of no use and is only meant to be thrown out then our project will be meaningless and our efforts would have gone to waste. Secondly we have to make sure that the materials to use actually biodegradable because a lot of children would be creating these pencils at their home and trying to plant the pencils in the environment which could be potentially harmful if not built with the correct material. Lastly was the accuracy of the lessons that we were teaching to the children.  we taught the children about reduce reuse recycle and various other strategies to protect the environment  hence it was an ethical decision to provide additional helpful information
