Basketball

Strand: Activity

Every year we have the opportunity to learn basketball and play different competitions as a result of the skills we acquire. Furthermore, my personal interest in the sports led me to take up Basketball as an activity to learn more about the sport and how it is played. I dedicated myself to 50 minutes of this activity twice a week for a year and a half. These sessions consisted of skill developments and reflection of what we had learnt. Taking forward the learning from these, our school teams entered inter-school competitions, of which i was a part of.

I achieved numerous learning outcomes and they are:

LO 1:Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

While learning and practicing the same, I successfully figured out that I could take shot baskets pretty well however I needed more practice to brush it up more.  I could help my team members defend too. However, I learnt that I need to work more upon communicating with others that could help me win more often. Identifying strengths and weaknesses gave me an opportunity and courage to work through areas of weakness and improvise myself in the sport.

LO 2:Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Taking up this activity and getting involved in it of course gave me an opportunity to learn something new, however, I faced a lot of challenges ,to commit to it because I was not a very sporty person. Yet, I pushed myself harder every time. Overcoming such challenges helped me discover new sides of the game and develop new skills too. Skills such as strategies to defend ourselves against opponents and offensive skills like cutting down to get the ball and score.

LO 4:Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

As mentioned earlier, it was difficult to start to stay completely involved in it, however my interest and commitment to make the best out of this opportunity helped me succeed in it. When I started learning new things about how the game is played, it intrigued my interest and I stayed committed to it until I gave up the thought of giving up. Despite the failures and bad attempts at playing the game, the thought of keeping trying made it possible for me to skillfully accomplish this CAS experience.

LO 5:Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

As we all know well that basketball is a team game and collaborative efforts make it possible and easy to succeed. I learned to trust my team members and their abilities. There used to be times while playing that a member or two were good at shooting baskets whereas other 2 were good at controlling the ball, so at times like this, I trust them to fulfill their parts. This helped me realize the benefits of working collaboratively, where every individual including me showcase their best skills, and if everyone does what they are good at then the team together can overcome every challenge and succeed.

This CAS activity helped me to understand how synergizing can make things much easier. It helped me understand how things can be achieved even if you are not good at everything if you trust your team members and work along well with one another. Moreover, I also developed the ability to be committed and not give up easily.
