Beach Cleaning

Having visited dumas serval times, I always knew that plastic pollution had been a significant problem in the beach’s vicinity. During my Diwali break, few of my friends and I visited the beach for a casual game of cricket, however, as soon as we got there we noticed that there were mounts of plastic litter spread over the beach. These were bags, wrappers, bottles and slippers. Sadly, we had to leave the beach as it was rendered useless for the game. We later contacted an NGO called Nature Club Surat, who were kind enough for letting us participate in their nature drive

LO3– Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

We showed commitment to the cause, by initiating the idea of cleaning the beach. This wasn’t particularly easy as to even archive some results, at least 20-25 volunteers were needed. We had to contact numerous organizations to provide volunteers and equipment to clean the beach. However most of them were short on volunteers due to the Diwali holidays. That’s when we could convince nature club to integrate their cleanliness drive and the beach cleaning program.

LO5:- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

Cleaning a beach isn’t easy, particularly if you’re alone, but luckily that wasn’t the case. All of us were grouped into teams of five and were allocated certain parts of the beach. The trash had to be filled into a large trash bag by each team. The issue that caused arguments was that nobody wanted to carry the trash-bag(due to its filthy nature). Nevertheless, we were able to sort out the problems by passing the bag around after few time intervals. This plan made the whole process much simpler and smoother and we were able to cover more ground much faster.

LO7:- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

After the tedious work, I realized that this was just a small step toward solving serious global water pollution. There are millions of people around the world who lose their lives due to not having access to clean water. Moreover, the flora and fauna of the oceans are being greatly affected by our action. We have driven many species to the brink of extinction. Participating in such drives made me realize that due to the few inconsiderate individuals, someone may lose their life. After the drive, we stuck a few don’t litter signs on the beach to raise awareness and make people reconsider their actions.
