Farewell (Music Team Leader)

A farewell is an event that is very emotional and important for students as it is an event that brings back memories of school life. I was the Music team leader for the farewell where I had to decide songs to play on the farewell, the flow of the performances and the location to better improve the event. In this event, I had to constantly manage my team as well as stay contacted with other leaders so that we don’t have problems in the future. The learning outcomes I achieved were LO 1, LO 2, LO 3, LO 4, LO 5 and LO 7.

LO 1-Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

My strength was managing people. Although I was new to it, I believe that I did a good job and the playing part where I was in performance was also my strength. My weaknesses were that I gave too much liberty to my teammates which being a leader is not good and I feel that it could have changed the outcome of the event a lot. The other was that I would easily lose temper which was disappointing as I was the leader and I had to remain calm.

LO 2-Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

I learned management skills as it was very important to manage people effectively as there was too much on the stake. Moreover, cooperation skills were also very important as band performance requires teamwork as everyone is required to learn their part and if one is not able to do it the whole band suffers and deciding band practice dates was also necessary.

LO 3- Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The basic idea of what we wanted to do on the day of the performance and how we did it was what matters. We had regular sessions and band practices. We had to stay in contact with our supervisor and the student leaders for the the Farewell event so that the flow of the performance required to have a good event was achieved. We had meetings with Music leaders and Process Organisers of the school for the instruments so that all of the key components were ready beforehand. This is how we planned and executed the event.

LO 4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

We had to stay committed as we had to come early to school to practice and we had scheduled 3 days per week for practice and meetings which shows the commitment of the group to have a good performance.

LO 5-Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working together divided the workload and made us more efficient as everyone had a task to do such as one had to manage the instruments, the other to schedule meetings so that everyone was working together and have a collaborative effort.

LO 7-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Ethics come into picture when we had to select the songs to play on the day of the event. We had to choose songs which were best for the event. We had to narrow down songs which were both Hindi and English to show the fairness of choice as some may like Hindi songs while the others would like English so we had to take everyone’s perspectives into consideration. We also had to choose songs which did not disrespect someone’s beliefs and values and respect their opinions. These excluded many songs we wanted to perform but we did not do it and some other songs which were more suitable.

To conclude, farewell was a great experience for me to manage people and also, showcase my skills.
